Today, We’ll walk you through the steps to open and close a Conestoga RGN trailer, sharing some key tips to make the process smooth and safe.
Step 1: Start by Removing Bungees
- Front End Bungees: Begin at the front end of the trailer, removing two bungee cords on each side. This lets the cover slide freely forward.
- Rear End Bungees: Move to the back of the trailer and remove four bungees — two on each side.
Step 2: Release the Rear Flap
Next, release the flap secured by velcro on each side, and pull down the rope attached to the “garage door” at the back. Secure it to hooks on the driver’s side.
Step 3: Release Tension Straps
Release the straps that hold the Conestoga tight against the frame, loosening them to ensure smooth movement. Then, unhook the connectors attached to the outer covering on both sides.
Step 4: Align and Move the Panels
- Move the First Panel: Start by pushing the first panel forward.
- Align the Rear Panel: Ensure the rear panel connects securely to the one in front by aligning a metal bar from the first panel into the channel and bracket on the second panel. This connection stabilizes the rear panel as you slide the entire assembly forward.
- Push Panels Forward Evenly: Keep an eye on both sides to prevent the cover from catching between panels, especially in windy conditions.
Step 5: Check the Track Alignment
As the trailer cover reaches the front deck, align the rollers into the track. The front panel must lock securely, allowing the covering to remain stable as you load and secure the freight.
Step 6: Securing Cargo Inside the Conestoga
When securing cargo, remember that all securements must remain inside the cover. Use the specialized securement plates that attach directly to the inner rail of the Conestoga, allowing the cover to close fully.
Step 7: Closing the Conestoga
Once the cargo is secured, it’s time to close the cover:
- Unlock Front Pins: Release the pins on the front panel holding the second panel in place to allow backward movement.
- Move Panels Back: Slowly slide the panels back, moving them evenly on each side to prevent track misalignment. If resistance occurs, check for any wheels that may have slipped out of alignment.
- Rear Panel Entry: As the rear panel reaches the back track, ensure it aligns with the guide track to prevent jams.
- Release Rear Pins: Release the pins holding the rear panel bar to allow the back to fully close.
Step 8: Retighten Straps and Reinstall Bungees
- Straps: Tighten the straps to add tension to the cover, keeping it secure during transport.
- Bungees: Reattach the four bungees at the front and rear to hold the Conestoga firmly in place.
Key Tips for Safe and Smooth Operation
- Take Your Time: Don’t rush the process. Forcing movement usually means the wheels are off the track or the panels are misaligned.
- Get Assistance: If possible, have someone help on the opposite side for balanced movement and alignment.
- Check Locks: Ensure the rear panel bar locks correctly into the brackets for secure movement.
