In this episode of Beyond the Road, host Holli sits down with Sam, a 24-year veteran of Anderson Trucking Service, to talk about what it really takes to keep complex project freight moves on track.

As a site liaison, Sam plays a key role in connecting drivers, customers, and job sites, helping ensure large-scale freight moves happen safely, efficiently, and on schedule. His job involves managing and training site supervisors, planning routes, problem-solving on the ground, and keeping communication lines open between all parties involved.

What’s a Site Liaison?

Sam oversees a network of independent site supervisors who act as the main point of contact at job sites. These individuals are trained by ATS and are responsible for making sure projects run smoothly — from checking route clearances to coordinating truck arrivals and resolving onsite issues.

Planning Starts Long Before the First Load Moves

A major part of Sam’s work happens before the first truck rolls. He and his team:

Match the right supervisor to each job

Pre-drive routes to check for hazards like sharp turns or low bridges

Coordinate with project managers and customers

Plan around possible delays or obstacles

This intense level of planning helps reduce downtime, prevent mistakes, and ensure that every move goes off without surprises.

Helping Customers Understand the Full Scope

Many customers don’t realize how much work goes into moving large freight until they see it firsthand. Sam regularly works with clients to explain what’s required, from bucket trucks lifting power lines to navigating tight city corners with multi-axle trailers. For many, it’s eye-opening.

“Sometimes transportation is an afterthought,” Sam explains. “We help them realize how much planning and coordination is needed.”

Supporting Drivers in the Field

Drivers benefit from having site supervisors, too. These team members provide real-time updates, local knowledge, and a go-to contact on-site. That support helps drivers stay informed, safe, and on schedule.

Inside the Move

Check out the full episode as Sam dives into ATS driver and pilot car training, complex trailer systems, building trust between drivers and escorts, and how different states enforce unique regulations for oversize freight. He also shares surprising behind-the-scenes details, like how many utility lines need to be lifted during a wind blade move, or how long it can take to plan a route.
